K-9 Handler Officer Cesar Lopez
and K-9 Chase
K-9 Chase joined the department on November 1, 2008. Chase and his handler, Officer Cesar Lopez, attended a 240-hour training and certification course in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which concluded on March 5, 2010. Chase is a male German Shepard imported from Germany. Chase had no previous police experience.
During his training in New Mexico, Chase learned to detect the odors of marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine/crack, MDMA/"Ecstacy", and their derivatives. He has been
deployed multiple times, resulting in the recovery of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia. K-9 Chase also received training in tracking and criminal apprehension. The team trains on a continuous basis throughout the year on their own, as well as with the Madison Police and Dane County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Units.
