Personnel

OVERVIEW

More than 80 people support the operations of the Fitchburg Fire Department: firefighters and fire officers, investigators, accountability team members, a videographer, and a business manager.

LIST OF DEPARTMENT MEMBERS

Each member falls into one of the following employment categories: career, paid-on-call, paid-on-premises, or intern.

Career staff are full-time employees of the City of Fitchburg who provide the core staffing of the on-duty emergency crews and are responsible for many additional duties such as: fire inspections, public education, maintenance of equipment, record keeping and numerous other administrative duties.

They work one of three schedules depending upon their position:

  • Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm
  • Monday - Thursday, 7am - 5pm
  • A 24-hour shift (7am - 7am) every third day (24 hrs on, 48 hours off)

Those working 24-hour shifts are assigned to A Shift, B Shift or C Shift.

Paid-on-call personnel are individuals who either live in the city or with four miles of a Fitchburg fire station. They are expected to respond to staff additional apparatus whenever more than one vehicle is dispatched for an emergency, both on-duty crews are already involved with emergency calls, or another fire department is requesting mutual aid. They may also choose to work in the station as part of the on-duty crew through the Fill-In Program.

Paid-on-premises firefighters are individuals who wish to participate in the Fill-In Program but do not live within in the city or near either of the fire stations. Most are firefighters with another fire department. They train with the other members of the Fitchburg Fire Department and work at least one shift each month. They generally do not respond to emergencies when not on duty.

Interns are college students who are enrolled in either the fire science or paramedic training programs at Madison College (nee Madison Area Technical College). They live and work in a Fitchburg fire station for one to three years. Each is assigned to one of the three shifts (A, B or C) and work as part of that fill-in crew except during the school day.
