Natural areas can be generally defined as areas of scenic, geologic, or ecological value. Forested areas, prairies, grasslands, wetlands, other wildlife habitat, rock outcrops, and land surrounding natural waterbodies can all be considered natural areas.

Many natural areas can be found within Fitchburg's park and open space system. Some are found within parks and others are managed solely as natural areas (refer to the list below).

Natural Areas Management

As time and resources allow, the Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department aims to prepare and implement management plans for its unique public natural areas and perform restoration activities, such as prescribed prairie burns and invasive species removal.
