Plans and Projects
McKee Farms Park
The McKee Farms Park Splash Pad made its grand opening on August 16, 2013.
Other park improvements to be completed in 2013 include:
-Installation of open air shelter next to Kids Crossing
-Additional lighting along path
-Installation of 2 skate pond light poles and timer
Dawley Bike Hub
The bike hub in Dawley Conservancy overlooking Dunn's Marsh is currently under construction. It will include a shelter, bike repair station, information kiosk, water and restrooms. It will serve as a hub and resting spot for Capital City State Trail and Cannonball Trail users, as well as other Fitchburg bicyclists.
The City of Fitchburg and the City of Madison have begun a master plan update process for the jointly-owned Jamestown Park. Neighbors have the opportunity to provide their input regarding the park master plan. See the link above for meeting information and planning documents.
The city will be identifying options for the future use of the Nine Springs Golf Course property (33 acres), including potential use as a park/open space. The Fitchburg Planning and Parks Departments are seeking input for the development of this master plan. See the link above for meeting information.
As a result of the McGaw Park Master Plan (2012), the city will complete the first phase of implementing park improvements in 2013. This will include the following:
-Installation of recreation path east of access driveway from Lacy Road to interior parking lots
-Installation of lighting in lower parking lot and along new shared use path
-Re-construction of ½ basketball court to a full court
Quarry Hill Park
The city is undergoing a pilot project to restore the old fencelines around the park with native plants. The removal of fencing, debris, invasive understory plants and poor quality trees along the east and south fencelines has been completed. No-mow grass has been planted in these areas. The city will also be working with neighbors to develop a planting plan and begin implementation this fall.
City Tree Preservation Ordinance
Staff is currently working on a draft City Tree Preservation Ordinance. The scope of the ordinance should cover projects undertaken by the City on public land and should also include work by utility companies, private residential, commercial or industrial projects. The ordinance will regulate tree preservation, replacement and new planting. It shall include provisions for education or enforcement.
In January 2012, the City of Fitchburg adopted the McGaw Park Master Plan. The Fitchburg Parks and Planning Departments worked with the Park Commission to create a plan that reflects the input and feedback of citizens and park users. The City will begin implementing Phase 1 of the plan in 2013.
The Proposal is a comprehensive study of Fitchburg’s natural, cultural, and historical resources, and a recommendation of areas to be considered for future parks, recreation facilities, and protected open space.
This plan sets forth goals, objectives, and policies for developing and improving Fitchburg's park and open space system and protecting the community's valued resources.
