Minimum Qualifications by Fire Department Position

Career Firefighter

Minimum Requirements for Appointment
• Signed and complete employment application package
• Meet initial applicant screening criteria
• State of Wisconsin Certified Firefighter II
• Wisconsin entry-level Fire Apparatus Driver Operator – Pumper
• Enrollment in EMT-Basic or eligible for Wisconsin EMT-Basic License

Minimum Requirements to successfully complete Probationary Period
• City of Fitchburg Fire Department orientation training and basic fire skills evaluation
• Licensed EMT-Basic in State of Wisconsin
• State of Wisconsin Certified Fire Apparatus Driver Operator – Pumper
• State of Wisconsin Certified Fire Apparatus Driver Operator – Aerial

Minimum Annual Performance Requirements
• Maintain Wisconsin EMT-Basic License
• Maintain ability to function as an fire apparatus driver operator
• Complete 100% of all assigned Fire Prevention Inspections (if applicable)
• Meet or exceed all goals established for assigned Department Programs (if applicable)
• Maintain a level of personal physical fitness and ability to carry out the duties of a     Firefighter, as demonstrated through successful completion of the Department’s annual minimum firefighting skill’s evaluation, if conducted.
• Other requirements as identified during annual performance evaluation

Paid-on-Call Firefighter

Minimum Requirements for Appointment
• Signed and complete employment application package
• Meet initial applicant screening criteria
• Residence at least 75% of the time during a normal week in the City of Fitchburg, or residence at least 75% of the time during a normal week within the minimum response area for paid-on-call firefighters as approved by the City of Fitchburg Police and Fire Commission (PFC)

Minimum Requirements to Successfully Complete Probationary Period
• State of Wisconsin entry-level firefighter training
• City of Fitchburg Fire Department orientation training and basic fire skills evaluation
• CPR training or re-certification (if needed)

Minimum Annual Performance Requirements
• Paid-on-Call firefighters shall attend at least 50% of the regular monthly training drills
• Paid-on-Call firefighters shall respond to 30% of alert pages for multiple resource responses
• Maintain a level of personal physical fitness and ability to carry out the duties of a Firefighter, as demonstrated through successful completion of the Department’s annual minimum firefighting skill’s evaluation if conducted

Paid On-Premises Firefighter

Minimum Requirements for Appointment
• Signed and complete employment application package
• Meet initial applicant screening criteria
• State of Wisconsin Certified Firefighter I

Minimum Requirements to successfully complete Probationary Period
• City of Fitchburg Fire Department orientation training and basic fire skills evaluation
• CPR training or re-certification (if needed)

Minimum Annual Performance Requirements
• LTE firefighters shall attend all regular monthly fire department training drills (except as excused by the Fire Chief or his/her designee).
• Maintain a level of personal physical fitness and ability to carry out the duties of a Firefighter, as demonstrated through successful completion of the Department’s annual minimum firefighting skill’s evaluation if conducted

Intern Firefighter

Minimum Requirements for Internship
• Signed and complete employment application package
• Meet initial applicant screening criteria
• Accepted application or on waiting list for enrollment in the Madison Area Technical College Fire Science Degree program

Minimum Requirements to Successfully Complete Probationary Period
• State of Wisconsin entry-level firefighter training
• City of Fitchburg Fire Department orientation training and basic fire skills evaluation
• CPR training or re-certification (if needed)
• Maintain enrollment in the Madison Area Technical College Fire Science degree program, and maintain an overall C or better grade-point-average during the probationary period

Minimum Annual Performance Requirements
• Interns shall attend all regular monthly fire department training drills (except as excused by the Fire Chief or his/her designee).
• Maintain enrollment in the Madison Area Technical College Fire Science degree program, and maintain an overall C or better grade-point-average throughout the period of employment as an Intern Firefighter
• Maintain a level of personal physical fitness and ability to carry out the duties of a Firefighter, as demonstrated through successful completion of the Department’s annual minimum firefighting skills evaluation if conducted
